Glossary

For the purpose of this play, you should become familiar with some terms that will help you to navigate your reading –

Strophe – indicates the first section of a speech; would trigger a collective movement from stage left to stage right by player

Anti Strophe – indicates the second section of the speech; would trigger a collective movement from stage right to stage left by the player

Epode – indicates the third, and often final section of the speech; triggering a collective movement to the front of the stage by the player

Theatron – the theatre, or seating area for the audience members

Parados – the wings of the theatre; the actors would enter via these walkways

Orchestra – the platform or stage area; often there would be a font of holy water or oil in the middle of the stage to serve as on offering to the gods

Skene – the backdrop of the theatre
